42 swimmers to swim across Straits of Malacca in May

KUALA LUMPUR (Sin Chew Daily/ ANN) - A total of 42 swimmers are set to swim across Straits of Malacca from Ruput Island in Riau to Port Dickson from 4-7 May. Swimmers from eight countries aged between 22 and 57 are taking part in the non-profit event where some of the swimmers are from Royal Malaysian Air Force and Royal Malaysian Navy. 

The Melaka Straits Swim 2018 from 4 to 7 May will see 42 swimmers to swim across the straits from Ruput Island in Riau, Indonesia to Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan. 
Project director Abdul Razak Abdul Aziz said the non-profit activity is organised by a group of avid swimmers where the members also comprise of Royal Malaysian Air Force and Royal Malaysian Navy.
The journey is estimated to be between 50km to 70km. 
The 42 swimmers come from eight countries and region such as Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Peru, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States and Australia.
Abdul Razak said the event is not a competition and no time limit is set for swimmers in solo category and relay category.
The youngest swimmer is 22-year-old from air force and the eldest is him at 57-year-old.
“It depends on the sea condition and also the physical status of the swimmer on that they. If the swimmer is sea-sick, then a backup swimmer will take over,’’ he said.
Asked whether the swim will help to raise fund for charity, Abdul Razak said swimming event may be organised for the disabled next year.
One of the swimmers is Wang Nian An, an American who is living in Malaysia with her German husband for three and a half year. Each month she will travel to Port Dickson with her husband and children to swim. This is her first time taking part in long distance swimming and she will be swimming in relay category. 
Former national swimmer Jessie Wong said she wanted to give herself a challenge and took up the solo category. 
Currently she swims about seven to 10km in a day and on the average she swims about 40km in a week.
