AG: Bill to abolish death penalty in Sri Lanka inconsistent with law

COLOMBO (The Island/ANN) - The private member’s bill tabled in parliament to abolish capital punishment inconsistent with the law, says Attorney General.
President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that the Attorney General had written to him that the private member’s bill tabled in parliament to abolish capital punishment was inconsistent with the law.
Addressing an event at the Divulapitiya Esplanade, the President said that when he tried to reintroduce the death penalty in order to eradicate the drug menace, even those in the government were against it and even gone to the extent of trying to introduce a bill seeking to abolish the death penalty.
