Asean’s 50th, Laos’ 20 years of membership welcomed with morning walk

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - The nation’s Prime Minister was among more than 1,000 walkers from ministries and international organisations to stride out upon the city’s central Lane Xang Avenue at daybreak on Saturday morning to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of Asean and 20th Anniversary of Lao PDR’s Accession to the bloc.

Gathered in Patuxay Park in Vientiane to walk the Mini-marathon event were Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saleumxay Kommasith, government officials, ambassadors, representatives of international organisations to Laos.   

The Mini-marathon followed the avenue from Patuxay Park to the Presidential Palace before returning.

Foreign Minister Saleumxay welcomed those in attendance.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Mini-marathon, which is one of our activities to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of Asean and 20th Anniversary of Lao PDR’s Accession to Asean,” Saleumxay said

“Asean Day is a meaningful day for the people of Asean member states and this year’s celebration is very special as it marks a historic milestone of the Golden Jubilee of Asean.

“While Asean people are celebrating the achievements of Asean over the last 50 years, Asean looks forward with excitement to the next years and beyond of working hand in hand among the member states and with all external partners for peace, stability and prosperity of the Asean Community and the world at large.

He said for the Laos, this year marks its 20 years of membership.

“Throughout the past two decades of being part of Asean family, Laos has actively carried out its obligations, made important contributions and has benefited from the Asean Community building process and partnership with all Asean external partners.

“We look forward to continuing to play our part in contributing to further strengthening the Asean Community and its external relations.”

He also expressed sincere thanks to the nation’s leaders, all members of the Diplomatic Corps in Vientiane and all distinguished guests for participating in this important event.

“I also appreciate your participation in previous celebratory activities to commemorate these important occasions over the past days,” he said.

“Let’s walk together to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Founding of Asean and 20th Anniversary of Laos to Asean and also for our good health, and for our friendship and partnership.”
