Asean lays groundwork ahead of 11th ministerial meeting on youth
VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Senior officials from member countries yesterday discussed preparations for the 11th Asean Ministerial Meeting on Youth (AMMY XI) which is focusing on enhancing young people’s role in sustainable development and regional integration.
The Lao People’s Revolutionary Youth Union hosted the Senior Officials Meeting in Vientiane ahead of the AMMY XI which runs until July 20.
In his welcome speech to senior Asean officials, Director of the International Relations Cooperation Department, under the Lao Youth Union, Mr Somkiao Kingsada, said the gathering was intended to prepare for the ministerial meeting on youth and related meetings, especially the deliverables.
One of the key outcomes of the ministerial meeting will be the adoption of the proposed terms of reference amendments, which need further consideration and endorsement by the Senior Officials Meeting before submission to the AMMY for adoption.
Mr Somkiao said the meeting would also review the progress of activities and projects under the Asean Work Plan on Youth for 2016-2020.
It would endorse the statement at the 10th AMMY on Asean Youth Day, adapting to climate extremes, coping with natural disasters, and carrying on youth development indices in the second period.
There was also an exchange of views in the development of the post 2020 Asean Work Plan on Youth.
Other topics related to the Senior Officials Meeting reported on key youth events in line with the Asean Chairmanship, and outcomes of the Asean Work Plan on Youth 2016-2020 midterm validation workshop.
The proceedings also comprised an update on activities and projects coordinated by other partners, and a review of the sustainability of the Asean University Student Council Union.
