Cambodian ruling party wins all seats at the National Assembly

PHNOM PENH (Rasmei Kampuchea Daily/ ANN) - The National Election Committee (NEC) of Cambodia released yesterday evening the official result of the 6th legislature of the National Election sand said ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) got all the 125 National Assembly (NA) seats.

Altogether, 20 political parties competed in the July 29 parliamentary elections, but only CPP won the NA seats, NEC said in its press release.

Among the new elected lawmakers, there are 19 women, and the eldest lawmaker is 84 years old, while the youngest is 32 years old, it added.

20 political parties are CPP, Cambodian Youth Party, Cambodian Nationality Party, Khmer National United Party, FUNCINPEC Party, Khmer United Party, Grassroots Democracy Party, New Light Party, Beehive Social Democratic Party, League for Democracy Party, Khmer Anti-Poverty Party, Dharmacracy Party, Republican Democratic Party, Our Motherland Party, Khmer Rise Party, Khmer Economic Development Party, Khmer Will Party, Khmer Republican Party, Reaksmey Khemra Party, and Cambodia Indigenous People Democracy Party.

The 6th National Election was conducted under the witness of 79,612 local observers from 112 institutions and 538 international observers from 70 institutions and foreign embassies in Cambodia, up from some 40,000 and 243, respectively in the previous mandate, as well as 79,849 political agents from 14 out of 20 registered political parties.

As scheduled, the new NA’s inaugural session will take place in the morning of Sept. 5, 2018 under the chairmanship of His Majesty Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, then the newly elected lawmakers will take oath at the Royal Palace in the afternoon.

The next day, Sept. 6, the NA will hold its first session in the morning to elect its new leadership and to form the new Cabinet, and then the new cabinet members will be sworn in in the afternoon of the same day, while the Cabinet’s first meeting will be on Sept. 7, 2018.

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has once again thanked all his supporters, after the NEC released the official results of the 6th National Election.

“Thank you all compatriots for having decided to go to vote on July 29, 2018, thus making the turnout rate high with 6,956,900 voters or 83.02 percent,” said the Premier in a Facebook post this evening.

Samdech Hun Sen also thanked all CPP members, especially those who have actively participated in the election campaign and voted for CPP. NEC has just announced officially that CPP won the 125 seats at all the 25 municipal and provincial polling centres.

“This shows clearly that you all have irreversible confidence on the right leadership of CPP,” he stressed. “And you all decided to choose peace, development and rooted democracy which are so important for our whole nation.”

Thanks, other 19 political parties that competed in the election held in a democratic, equal, free, just and fair manner, he added, confirming that the 6th-mandate Royal Government will be formed in the first week of September.

In the previous National Election held in July 2013, CPP won 3.23 million votes, or 68 of the 123 NA seats, while the Cambodia National Rescue Party got 2.9 million votes or the remaining 55 seats.
