President Xi Jinping urged on Thursday greater contributions from the BRICS Business Council and the New Development Bank to the economic and social development of BRICS countries, emerging market economies and other developing countries.

He said he hoped the two institutions will carry forward the spirit of entrepreneurship and strive for more achievements.

Xi made the remarks during the BRICS leaders’ dialogue with the business council and the bank on the last day of the 11th BRICS Summit in Brasilia, capital of Brazil.

The leaders were briefed on reports of the two institutions’ work and accepted the annual work report of the business council.

Xi fully affirmed the work of the two institutions and underlined the necessity to deepen cooperation in such areas as innovation and the digital economy to produce more quality projects.

He called on the institutions to enhance communication and coordination via cooperative mechanisms inside and outside BRICS countries, continue to offer advice and suggestions to governmental departments and help the countries improve their business environment.

Xi stressed that profits and social responsibilities should be balanced and urged the institutions to pay attention to the well-being of people’s livelihoods.

Cooperation in building high-quality, sustainable, inclusive and accessible infrastructure should be strengthened, he said, noting the importance of exploring and promoting environmentally friendly technologies.

The president also said the two institutions should improve their research capabilities, and he urged the New Development Bank to prepare for membership expansion.

Leaders of the other BRICS countries also expressed affirmation of the work of the two institutions.
