Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa to be fielded as UNP’s Prime Ministerial candidate?
COLOMBO (The Island/ANN) - UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa proposed as UNP’s Prime Ministerial candidate for the next General Election.
Parliamentarian Vajira Abeywardena, considered a confidant of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, says Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa should be named as Prime Ministerial candidate of the UNP-led alliance being formed for the next General Election.
Asked if Sajith Premadasa would be appointed leader of the UNP, Abeywardena said yesterday that Sajith was a capable politician with a bright future, but in the current context, the party needed a mature leader and that role was being performed well by Ranil Wickremesinghe, as exhibited in his decisions to nominate Sajith as both the NDF’s Presidential candidate and now as Opposition leader.
"I think Sajith should be our Prime Ministerial candidate as well ", Abeywardena noted adding that there were examples of the leader and Presidential or Prime Ministerial candidates of a party being two different persons.
He said that when Sirimavo Bandaranike was leader of the SLFP, she nominated Chandrika Kumaratunga as Presidential candidate. Similarly though Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the President, it was his brother Mahinda who continued to lead the Podujana Peramuna.
