EPF, ETF arrears amounting to more than USD 5.6 million to estate workers settled – Govt.
COLOMBO (The Island/ANN)- Government has allocated more than USD 5.6 million for the payment of EPF and ETF arrears owed to estate sector workers by Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa Governments, says Public Enterprise Lakshman Kiriella.
The government had allocated more than USD 5.6 million for the payment of EPF and ETF arrears for estate sector workers that had not been paid for over two decades during Chandrika Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa Governments, Public Enterprise, Kandyan Heritage and Kandy Development Minister and Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament yesterday.
He said that money had been granted during the 100-day programme.
Minister made that observation in response to a query made by MP Velu Kumar during the round of questions for oral answers.
When MP Velu Kumar pointed out that the seven-perch plots of lands had not been granted to workers on several estates including the Hantana Estate, Minister Kiriella said that the government had granted land to estate sector workers for the first time in history. "We are proud of it," Minister Kiriella said. "Only a few have yet to be given lands."
