India’s legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is ‘on a path to recovery,’ her family has said.

"The Nightingale of India" was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai early Monday morning after she complained of breathing difficulties.

The singer, who turned 90 on September 28, was in a critical condition, it was reported.

"Lata didi (elder sister) suffered from a viral chest infection. So, we got her to the hospital. But now, she is on a path of recovery. Thank you for your concern," Rachana Shah, the singer’s niece, said in a statement. The singer will soon be discharged.

"She was brought to hospital at about 2 am. She is critical and in ICU," a hospital insider told PTI. The Hindu newspaper reported that she is under the treatment of physician and intensivist Dr. Farokh E Udwadia. The daily quoted a source saying that she was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit and was on ventilator support.

She began her career in singing in 1942, and sang her last song last year. During her 76-year-long career, she practically sang for every Hindi film heroine. She also sang in Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu and a host of other languages. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in the country, in 2001, in addition to winning scores of other awards.
