Laos, Kunming promote shared tourism
VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Laos and China are continuing a joint tourism drive, aiming to boost cooperation in economic and trade relations.
The Kunming Municipal Culture and Tourism Bureau and the Lao Happy International Travel Co., Ltd. last weekend organised an event in Vientiane to promote tourism in Kunming.
The event was attended by delegations from the International Friendship Cities Tourism Alliance and the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, as well as Chinese visitors from Kunming.
Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, is known as ‘the City of Eternal Spring’ for its pleasant climate and flowers that bloom all year round. With a history of more than 2,400 years, it was the gateway to the celebrated Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar, India and beyond.
Today it is the provincial political, economic and cultural centre of Yunnan as well as the most popular tourist destination in southwest China.
In November 2017, Kunming and five international friendship cities in Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Cambodia and Myanmar and five popular tourism cities in Yunnan cooperated to establish the association for tourism friendship cities in Kunming.
Over the past year, under cooperation with the association, Kunming has supported relations and cooperation with these international friendship cities.
The scheme has involved setting up coordination mechanisms between international tourism cities, creating an information mechanism, assigning journalists to advertise and distribute tourism resources and international tourism routes in friendship cities, and creating tourism promotion platforms to attract visitors.
Kunming is also promoting trade and investment cooperation in the friendship cities and has helped them to find partners in tourism development projects, created a website in two languages, partnered with well-known domestic tourism enterprises, and taken foreign tourists to visit each of the friendship cities.
Through cooperation with the association it will help to develop tourism in the member cities to further boost cooperation in areas such as culture, education, health, sports, and science and technology between Kunming and international friendship cities, as well as elsewhere in China and overseas.
The meeting served to promote cooperation and exchange between Laos, Kunming, South Asia and Southeast Asia in creating plans for partnerships in tourism.
Cooperation between Kunming and international friendship cities is also part of the Belt and Road Initiative, which is creating new innovations in cooperation between businesses and government.
