Laos, Vietnam cooperate in tropical ecology

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - The Ministry of Science and Technology will continue collaborating with the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Centre in the field of tropical ecology research, to advance the good relationship between the three countries.

The message was delivered by the Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr Boviengkham Vongdara, on Monday when he welcomed the Director of the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Centre, Mr Dong Hong Trien, and his delegation.

The two parties have agreed to work together in the areas of ecology, biodiversity protection, and animal science.

Prof. Dr Boviengkham said the Vietnam government has played an essential role in the development of various sectors in Laos, including science and technology.

He said this cooperation is playing an important role in improving the efficiency of scientific research and application and technology transfer between Vietnam and Laos.

“It is operating in many main fields: tropical durability, tropical ecology, and tropical biomedicine, and conducting technology transfer,” he added.

On the same day, the two delegations agreed to follow up with respective authorities to report the results of discussions and areas of collaboration to obtain support and approval for future cooperation.

They also arranged to have further discussions and memorandums of understanding for each agreed area of cooperation in tropical ecology and biodiversity, water ecology, plant research and fauna in conservation areas of Laos.

Under the agreement, the parties will share expertise and scientific data through a Global Navigation Satellite System, which can be used to pinpoint geographic locations, agriculture, and tropical ecology and biodiversity.

Mr Dong Hong Trien said the proposed collaboration aimed to strengthen the coordination and mutual support of the parties in carrying out ecological research and organising conferences, as well as providing a scientific basis to enhance the special friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

Laos and Vietnam will need to encourage government officials and related agencies to expand cooperation in science and technology, including the exchange of information and experiences in tropical ecology and biodiversity.
