Local filmmaker brings a touch of Brunei to Cannes Film Festival

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei (Borneo Bulletin/ANN) -  Brunei Darussalam was represented at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival held in France, from May 14-25 by Brunei filmmaker Abdul Zainidi.

Brunei filmmaker Abdul Zainidi represented Brunei Darussalam at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival held in France, from May 14-25.
The local filmmaker is no stranger to the Cannes circuit, having participated in the short film corner two years ago, with Vanishing Children.
This year, Abdul Zainidi promoted his short film, The Worm and the Widow, a story set in the Tutong District about a mute young man and a widow, who are both social outcasts.
A winner of the Bucheon Award for last year’s Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), the project was developed in Busan Asian Film School in 2018, where Abdul Zainidi studied for a year after receiving a scholarship from the Korean Government.
Currently, he is promoting his short film to secure funding and more co-production projects in Europe.
In an interview, Abdul Zanidi said, “The festival is a huge spectacle that draws thousands of professionals from all over the world.  I was lucky enough to talk with Bong Joon-ho, the director of ‘Parasite’.”
Bong Joon-ho’s social satire, ‘Parasite’, won the coveted Palme d’Or award at this year’s edition of the Cannes film festival.
For now, Abdul Zainidi’s main goal is to form a solid working partnership between Korea and Europe, while boosting Brunei’s name on the international scene.
