Minister urges Brunei’s Public Service Dept to add value to roles

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN) - Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud called on the Public Service Department to re-evaluate the way it carries out its roles and responsibilities and add value to it, in areas such as Public Service framework projects, leadership development, succession planning, auditing of human resources, planning of training requirements in public service, work ethics, discipline and integrity.

During his working visit to the Public Service Department yesterday, which was meant to provide the opportunity for Public Service Department officers to interact and exchange ideas with the minister, particularly on development and the well-being of department’s employees, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Mokti additionally urged the department to look into its existing policies and regulations and ensure that they are always relevant.

Any changes, however, should take into account the views of stakeholders based on the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) concept.

The minister added that the department’s database should always be updated and kept in a systematic manner, for ease of monitoring and planning.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Mokti was welcomed on arrival at the Public Service Department by Permanent Secretary (Corporate Affairs and Public Administration) at the Prime Minister’s Office Haji Roslan bin Haji Taja’ah, and Acting Director-General of Public Service Dr. Norfarizal bin Othman.

The minister heard a short briefing on the role and functions of the Public Service Department and took part in subsequent discussion sessions.

The minister also launched the ‘Public Service Staff Digitisation Records’ project; ‘Book of Guidelines and Procedures for the Implementation of Public Service Manpower Auditing for Brunei Darussalam Government Agencies’; and the In-Service Training guidelines book.

He also took a closer look at the various efforts made by the department to become the main human resources agency for employees in the public service.

The minister also toured several divisions at the Public Service Department, during which he witnessed its Development Programme Plan workforce and the handing over of the Civil Service Leadership Pipeline handbook, and heard a briefing on the Public Service Department Portal.

Also present during the visit were permanent secretaries, deputy permanent secretaries, and senior officers at the Prime Minister’s Office.
