MRC launches regional photo contest

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - The Mekong River Commission (MRC) has launched a regional photo contest on the theme “Mekong Diversity Through Your Eyes” for amateur photographers of all ages who are citizens and residents of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

The competition seeks entries depicting creative photographic expressions representing the diversity of the Mekong River, from its beautiful nature to different uses of water to pressing challenges, to showcase the need for cross-border cooperation for sustainable development of the basin, according to an MRC statement posted on its website on July 7.

“The contest gives amateur photographers from the MRC’s member countries the opportunity to demonstrate the Mekong’s abundant natural resources and the economic and social challenges posed by competing demands for water use, as well as ideas on how best to address those impacts,” the Chief Executive Officer of the MRC Secretariat, Mr Pham Tuan Phan, said.

The contest, organised in collaboration with the National Mekong Committees of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, is part of the MRC’s Mekong Integrated Water Resources Management Project (M-IWRMP) that facilitates trans-boundary cooperation among lower Mekong countries at the national and basin levels, in conjunction with the application of the MRC’s procedural rules and tools on water use negotiation, data-sharing and river flow monitoring.

To participate in the competition, photographers can submit a maximum of five original photographs in digital format with a completed application form to [email protected] by September 24 (World River Day). Each photograph must include a caption of no more than 100 words in English or the respective native languages, describing what the image portrays.

Winners submitting the top 12 images will receive awards ranging from US$100 to US$500 in cash, medals and certificates at an award ceremony to be hosted by the MRC Secretariat in Vientiane, Laos, later this year.

The winning photographs may be displayed and featured in the 2018 MRC’s IWRMP calendar and other visual products.
