Myanmar: Port authorities to build a retaining wall at Mayu lighthouse to stave off erosion

YANGON (Eleven Media Group/ANN) - Myanma Port Authority (MPA) is planning to use over Ks4.5 billion to build a retaining wall at Mayu lighthouse on Mayu Island in 2018-19 FY, said Dr Myo Nyein Aye, Deputy General Manager of the MPA.

The authorities will use Ks1.5 billion in 2017-18 FY, Ks771 million from April to September budget and Ks2.314 billion in 2018-19 FY. It is expected to finish in 2019.

The lighthouse was built in 1885 in Rakhine State and is located 135 feet above the sea. Its location is significant for Myanmar maritime boundary. It was called Oyster lighthouse before and its name was changed in 1965. The lighthouse was powered by a generator and in 2009, a solar lamp was replaced. All guards were also withdrawn from the lighthouse.

“Although the island was announced as northern tip of the line for Myanmar maritime boundary since 1968, the buildings and beaches on the island were worn away by weather and other natural phenomenon. If the island disappears, it may cause us to lose our maritime territory,” said the deputy general manager.

It is located at the point where Kalakata, Sittong, Mayu, Kalartan and Laymyo rivers. It is a cone-shaped island as it was formed by the currents long ago.

As it is an island existing apart from the mainland without any real facilities, it was difficult to load and unload cargo from there. Availability of freshwater is also difficult as it faced bad weather and intense wind and tide.

The island is 1.8 acres in space: about 400 feet from south to north and about 200 feet from east to west.
