Penang Buddhist Temple Kek Lok Si offers study aid to Malaysian students

PENANG, Malaysia (Sin Chew Daily/ANN) - Yayasan Kek Lok Si, a foundation affiliated to Buddhist temple Kek Lok Si in Penang, is offering financial aid for 500 university students of all races with allocation of US$ 2,403 per student. Students are urged to apply before 16 June. 

Yayasan Kek Lok Si offers university and college students of all races from poor families study aid of RM1,000 for each recipient.
Yayasan Kek Lok Si financial aid adviser Dr Wong Teik Aun, temple abbot Venerable Xian Guan and Yayasan Kek Lok Si board member Datuk Steven Ooi announced in a press conference that the foundation is allocating RM500,000 to assist students from poor family background this year.

Dr Wong said Yayasan Kek Lok Si, set up in 2016, is a non-profit charitable organisation affiliated to the Kek Lok Si Temple. 

Last year, the foundation distributed RM479,000 to 479 students. In 2017, the sum was RM500,000.

The foundation is targeting at RM500,000 this year. 

If the number of eligible applicants exceed 500, the allocation will be topped up, said Dr Wong. 

He said the foundation will verify an applicant`s family background.

A recommendation letter from the teacher is required. The teacher can be the class teacher of the student, or tuition teacher who made the recommendation for knowing the applicant. 

Applicants must be Malaysians who are studying in Malaysia. Past applicants are still eligible to apply.  

Deadline for the application is 16 June. The study aid would be distributed in August.

A total of 1,159 people have benefited from the programme where RM1.46 million had been distributed so far.
