Saemaul Globalisation Foundation supporting Lao development with US$1.3 million

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - The Saemaul Globalisation Foundation from the Republic of Korea has agreed to support socio-economic development in rural Vientiane with more than 11 billion kip (US$1.3 million).

The support is for the Saemaul Pilot Village Development Project which aims to promote rural production among local residents in target villages so they will have more revenue as well as strengthen the nation’s overall socio-economic development.

The project will be implemented in the three target villages of Donevangpho, Thadeua Singhom and Markhiew in Pakngum district, Vientiane.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Wednesday between the Head of Vientiane’s Agriculture and Forestry Department, Dr Larxay Nuaonthasing, and the Representative of the Saemaul Globalisation Foundation to Laos, Mr Lee Kyungbok.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr Larxay said the project would bolster  agricultural production in target villages and increase rice yields. He urged authorities to focus on upgrading the skills of local people to maximise the benefits.

Mr Lee Kyungbok said they would encourage local residents to form agricultural production groups to boost incomes and build warehouses to store produce.

In addition, the Saemaul Globalisation Foundation will send senior experts to train local people.

The current phase of the project runs from this year to 2021, with activities including local residents being instructed by Korean advisors and supporting farmers in the use of new technology and dry paddy rice cultivation. The Vientiane Agriculture and Forestry Department agreed on further cooperation with the Saemaul Globalisation Foundation following previous successful project outcomes for villages in Pakngum district.

Since 2013, the Foundation has promoted development in rural areas and the erasing of poverty in developing countries.

The Foundation’s projects have resulted in villages being developed and local residents rising above poverty.
