South Korea-donated warship en route to Manila

MANILA (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - The Philippine Navy’s newly-acquired warship BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39) is now heading home to Manila.

The Philippine Navy’s newly-acquired warship BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39) is now heading home to Manila.

The Republic of Korean Navy held a send-off ceremony at Pier 7 of Jinhae Naval Base on Monday afternoon, said Lt. Cmdr. Maria Christina Roxas, acting director of naval public affairs office. The ship is expected to arrive in less than a week.

BRP Conrado Yap, a former Pohang-class corvette of South Korea, is equipped with anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and anti-air warfare capabilities.

The Philippine Navy commissioned the ship into service last August 5 in South Korea. It did not immediately sail home due to bad weather it could encounter along the way.

The ship will meet BRP Davao del Sur (LD-602), which joined the Russian Navy Day celebration in Vladivostok, at sea for a group sail while on its way to Manila.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana will lead the welcome ceremony for the two ships next week.
