Sri Lanka : Gotabhaya's brother says not fortunate to be Presidential candidate

COLOMBO ( The Island / ANN ) - Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that if the Podjuna Peramunas Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa referred to as the "Terminator" by his brother  Basil, came to power, there would be no freedom of expression unlike now, when his (Wickremesinghe's) critics were free to criticise him to their hearts content, without any fear of being exterminated.

Addressing United National Party (UNP) Local Government members from Colombo, Galle and Kurunegala at Temple Trees on Friday, the Prime Minister said that the use of the word "Terminator", indicated that all steps taken by his UNP-led  government since January 2015 to restore democratic governance and rule of law and establish independence of the judiciary and the police and people oriented development programmes and schemes, would be wiped out by the "Terminator" with one stroke, if he were to win the next Presidential Election.

Wickremesinghe said that people were free to criticise and at times even slander him, without any physical harm befalling them because his government had ensured restoration of the freedom of expression, after a decade of tyranny under Rajapaksa governments.

It was ironic that the word "Terminator" had been used by a leading member of the Podujana Peramuna, he added.

The Prime Minister told the UNP local councillors to campaign hard at the grassroots level, highlighting the work done by their government in the last four years to revive a bankrupt economy left by Rajapaksa administrations and also overcome natural calamities and obstacles created by their political opponents, to ensure that the UNP-led Democratic National Alliance wins the Presidential Election due later this year.

The leader of the Podujana Peramuna is former President and current Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa. Its chairperson is Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Basil Rajapaksa when asked by the media last week why he, who was an experienced politician and organiser was not the Presidential Candidate, replied that he was not so fortunate.
