Sri Lanka: SLFP will come to an agreement with SLPP to back Gotabaya

COLOMBO (The Island/ANN) - SLFP to come to agreement with SLPP to support its presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa only after discussing his economic and foreign policy.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will come to an agreement with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to support its presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa only after they discuss his economic and foreign policy, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary, MP Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday addressing a meeting at Angunukolapelessa.

"We want a leader that can end anarchy in the country. We see nothing wrong with the SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa, but there are things that we must discuss with him. Apart from his economic and foreign policies, we must talk about his anti-corruption policies," he said.

Amaraweera said that the United National Party (UNP) had a serious problem in selecting its presidential candidate. However, the decision of the UNP was not the SLFP’s concern as they would not ally with it in the coming election. He also said that there might be MPs who might go against the collective decision of the party.

"There will be people who try strike a good deal for themselves. However we are trying to bring as many MPs together and present a strong front", he added.

Amaraweera said that the SLFP would support a candidate that accepted their proposal to propel Sri Lanka into prosperity and that the discussions between the two parties had been positive so far.

"However we will do it on our own if someone refuses to accept our proposals or believe that we have no power. I don’t think it will come to that and I hope our discussions with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) end well," he said.
