Takanawa Gateway Station opens in Japan

TOKYO (The Japan News/ANN) - Becoming the first station to be added to East Japan Railway Co.’s Yamanote Line in 49 years, since Nishi-Nippori Station, Takanawa Gateway Station opened Saturday.

Takanawa Gateway Station opened Saturday, becoming the first station to be added to East Japan Railway Co.’s Yamanote Line in 49 years, since Nishi-Nippori Station.

 Located between Tamachi and Shinagawa stations, the new station in Minato Ward, Tokyo, also serves the Keihin-Tohoku Line. The station building was designed by architect Kengo Kuma, who was involved in the design of the new National Stadium.

 Amid the outbreak of the new coronavirus, the opening ceremony for the station was canceled Saturday. However, about 350 people turned out to see it open anyway, and cheered when the first train on the Yamanote Line arrived at the station.
