Two Bruneian military personnel deployed to Philippines

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin /ANN) - Brunei Darussalam deployed two Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) personnel for a tour of duty as members of the Independent Decommissioning Body Verification, Monitoring and Assistance Team (IDB VMAT) in Mindanao, Philippines.

The national flag handing-over and Doa Selamat ceremony was held at the Bolkiah Garrison yesterday.

Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof as guest of honour handed over the national flag to Lieutenant Colonel (U) Sherpor Nezam bin Abdul Ghapor as the head of delegation.

Also present were Commander of the RBAF Major General Pengiran Dato Paduka Seri Aminan bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, members of the Defence Executive Committee, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Service Commanders and Defence Attaché from the Republic of Philippines.

IDB VMAT is a step forward in the peace process in Mindanao to oversee the process of decommissioning of the forces and weapons of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

The IDB VMAT is composed of foreign experts from Brunei Darussalam, Turkey and Norway as well as representatives from the Government of the Philippines, MILF, and national staff.

The Ministry of Defence (MinDef) said the deployment marks another significant milestone for Brunei Darussalam in contributing towards the peace process in Mindanao since RBAF’s involvement as a member of the International Monitoring Team (IMT) in 2004.
