Lankan police urge public not to be misled by fake news on coronavirus

COLOMBO (The Island/ANN) – Police urges public not to be misled by fake news circulating in social media claiming that a number of coronavirus positive cases have been reported across Sri Lanka.

Police headquarters yesterday urged the public not to be misled by messages circulated in social media claiming that a number of coronavirus positive cases had been found across Sri Lanka.

Police also said that they would take action against those who spread fake news.

So far only one person, Jayantha Ranasinghe had tested positive for coronavirus and he is undergoing treatment at IDH. None of his family members, who are quarantined in their home, had tested positive.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Health also confirmed that the son of the person that had tested positive for coronavirus didn’t show any signs of infection. Earlier in the day there was a rumour that Ananda College, Colombo where the boy studies had shut down as he was tested positive.

Ranasinghe is a tour guide whose last trip was with four Italians. They had travelled to Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Kandy areas between March 3 and 8. After dropping the Italians, Ranasinghe had returned home, but was admitted on March 09.
