The new government of Malaysia does not affect his role as Malaysia’s Special Envoy to China, says Tan Kok Wai, who is also the chairman of Malaysia-China Business Council. 

Tan will not resign as Special Envoy to China because a new government has taken over from the Pakatan Harapan coalition, he said.
However, Tan is ready to accept termination letter from the new government, he said. 

He reiterated that his appointment as Special Envoy to China is to serve Malaysia and not a `backdoor government’. 

Tan, who is also Cheras MP under the Democratic Action Party, said he was appointed as the Special Envoy to China in a Cabinet meeting on 25 July 2018 for a period of two years by the Pakatan Harapan government. The tenure ends on 24 July this year. 

“If the new government does not terminate the appointment, I will not resign on my own, “he said, adding that the appointment is still valid despite a change of government. 

Tan said besides him, other political appointments made by the Pakatan Harapan -led government are still valid unless the government terminates the appointment. This includes Ean Yong Hian Wah who is appointed as the chairman of Port Klang Authority.
Tan gave two reasons for not resigning. He is appointed by the Pakatan Harapan government voted by the people. The appointment is valid and appropriate. He is holding a strong view on this as the new government is a `backdoor government` to him. 

“I will continue to carry out my role and my work. The staff and committee members of Malaysia-China Business Council work as usual,’’ he said. 

Tan said he still receives invitation to attend events. For instance, he attended the handover of donation raised by the Federation of Moral Uplifting Associations Malaysia and the Federation Of Ong Clan Associations to Bank of China on Tuesday. The two organisations raised fund to assist China in combating Covid-19.

“I have also met several entrepreneurs from China these few days to discuss about restoring and enhancing trade links between China and Malaysia,’’ he said.
