Brunei, Singapore former police squad mates walk down memory lane

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin /ANN) - In January 1980, six Brunei police officers and 13 Singapore police officers started their 10-month training at the Police Academy at Thomson Road Singapore.

Officers from the Brunei side were Intan Kassim (now Datin Paduka), Sharifah Salmah Alkaff, Fatimah Salleh, Momin Shawal, Aji Haji Pungut and Kamaruddin Talib.

After their training, they went on their separate career paths, some continuing in the civil service, whilst others left for the private sector.

All those who remained in the civil service have now retired, whilst two became practising lawyers - one in Singapore, the other in Brunei.

The group of 19 spawned two sets of marriages among the colleagues.

One was a Singaporean affair between Assistant Superintendent of Police Soh Hock Chuan and PSA W/Police Inspector Belinda Ho, while the other was a cross-border wedding between then Assistant Superintendent of Police Intan Kassim and Inspector Yusof Halim.

Yusof Halim resided in Brunei after the wedding, and was granted Brunei nationality years ago. He is now a well-known lawyer in Brunei.

The group enjoyed a partial reunion recently when four of the former Singapore police officers came to the Sultanate.

They reminisced their training days and recalled a colleague who had passed away.

Retired Singapore Deputy Assistant Commissioner Lee Chee Chiew said, “Our training was challenging but fun and we developed strong camaraderie among the squad mates. We had a really good time recalling what we did during our training days.”

Of the Bruneian officers, Datin Paduka Intan Kassim became the Director of Anti-Corruption Bureau, Momin Shawal became the Director of Narcotics Control Bureau and Sharifah Salmah Alkaff became the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
